What is Yoga?
A short and precise description of the word Yoga is not really possible. You will understand and feel Yoga only once you start practicing. But Yoga is much more than body exercise. Yoga teaches breathing, awareness, and to practice devotion. All this and many more is Yoga.
The word Yoga origins of the indo-European root ‘yug’. This can be translated with yoke, or with ‘to unite’, ‘to merge’, or with ‘to bring into line’.
“The word Yoga is derived from the Sanskrit root yui meaning to bind, join, attach and yoke, to direct and concentrate one’s attention on, to use and apply. It also means union or communion. It is the true union of our will with the will of God, … ” says Mahadev Desai in his introduction to the Bhagavad – Gita*. (B.K.S. Iyengar, Light on Yoga, Introduction)
